Shopify migration
Catalog migration onto Shopify without discarding organic URLs
A specialty retailer moved from an aging Magento 1 leftover stack onto Shopify. The brief was operational simplicity, not a visual reboot. The work was data, metafields, checkout parity and redirects.
Challenge
Years of category URLs were still receiving organic traffic. A previous redesign proposal had assumed a clean URL tree. Checkout used shipping and payment combinations that a default Shopify theme would not express.
Approach
- SKU, customer and order-history mapping into Shopify, with metafields for the attributes Magento had treated as first-class
- Redirect map from every indexable Magento URL to a Shopify equivalent
- Theme architecture using Online Store 2.0 sections instead of a forked premium theme
- App list reduced to integrations with a named owner
Outcome
The store launched with checkout methods merchandisers recognized and a redirect plan Search Console could digest. Theme edits for ordinary merchandising no longer required a developer.
